Import journey stages from a PDF, DOCX, or text file

Upload research notes, transcripts, or briefs and Claude proposes stages you can preview, edit, and merge into your journey.

Last updated May 3, 2026

If you've already prepared journey-mapping documents in Word, PDF, or plain text, you don't need to retype them stage by stage. Import them and Claude extracts a list of proposed stages you preview before merging.

Where to find it

On the journey Stages page, click Import from docs in the page header (next to Add Stage).

Supported file types

  • PDF (read natively by Claude with the document content block)
  • DOCX (extracted to text via the mammoth library on the server)
  • TXT and MD (passed as plain text)
  • Limits: up to 5 files per import, 10 MB per file, 30 MB total

How the merge works

Each proposed stage is matched against your existing stage names. If there's a match, you only see checkboxes for fields the existing stage hasn't filled yet — Journey Builder never overwrites your content silently. New stages are added at the end with checkboxes for every non-empty field.

Before applying, the journey is auto-snapshotted as "Before document import" so you can restore it from the version history drawer if you change your mind.

What it won't invent

Claude is instructed to leave pain points and opportunities empty when the documents don't say anything specific. If your input is thin, expect short stages — that's by design.
